Can a leopard change its spots?

In 18th century France, a storm is brewing. A boy finds the strength to turn his destiny around. But at a price!

The son of a convict and a gypsy, Javert is born in a prison cell. He lives his boyhood as a despised and bullied outcast. Overcoming all barriers, he becomes a successful police officer, but his harsh upbringing and the horrors of the French Revolution turn a vulnerable boy into an implacable adult. He is ashamed of his gypsy heritage and unyielding in his belief in right and wrong.

When he is forced to confront both his rigid beliefs and the truth about his background, Javert faces the greatest challenge of his life.

Barricades The Journey of Javert edition by C A Shilton Literature Fiction eBooks

I haven't read Les Miserables yet. I've only seen the movie with Russell Crowe as Javert, and I've seen the play. The author admits that though his book is based loosely on Victor Hugo's novel, he certainly took some artistic license...particularly with the end.

I loved this book! It is so rare that I can find a book that I can get into. The author was very successful in making Javert quite sympathetic and bringing up points about why he was the person he was. This character is not generally portrayed in lovable light. Javert is everything we worry about with the law--pig-headed and fanatical upholders who often go to extremes and are unable to judge situations and apply the law accordingly. This author brought up how being raised in a prison could have warped Javert, the social isolation he felt, and the general tumultuous times he lived in that would give him a hatred of disorder.

The story is well written and keeps a generally good pace. The few slow parts pick up speed within a few pages.

The only weakness of the book is that...well, do you remember when you were a kid, and you really loved a character? And then the character died, and you didn't want them to? So you made up ways where they could live happily ever after?

The ending was very sweet. It satisfied the part of me that didn't want Javert to suffer the fate that Victor Hugo wrote for him. Yet, there was a part of me that was dissatisfied because it wasn't a realistic ending for the character. The fact is, Javert was not a man that could be enlightened because he was too inflexible. That is what destroyed him, whereas Jean Valjean was able to change.

But I still have the book in my favorites because I still loved it.

Barricades The Journey of Javert edition by C A Shilton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I read this book quite smoothly, and the story progressed well. The first half of this book, or how Javert became the inspector we saw in Les Miserables, was quite convincing, for the author was successful to build several OCs showing their influence on this boy. However, the second half was not so exciting because of the overlap with the original book. The variation and abridgment of plots was quite understandable, but it was sometimes annoying to see the deviation of minor characters.
This "novel" supposedly gives the story of Les Miserables from Javert's point of view. It failed miserably. The author's stilted style and horrible dialogue bears all the marks of an amateur writer. Luckily the price was very low; the only thing I lost was a few hours of reading time. Someone should revoke this writer's keyboard.
I have just blasted my way through the last 100 pages of this page, literally unable to put it down. Barricades is the story of Javert from Les Miserables, and follows him from childhood explaining the events in his life that shape him into the harsh, uncompromising policeman we meet in Victor Hugo's classic tale.

The author does a fantastic job of pulling back the layers making us feel anger, compassion and frustration for this complicated man, while the story is rich and the backdrop of late 18th century, early 19th century France so vividly portrayed, it's difficult not to feel transported back in time to smell the stench of the prisoners in the garrison or feel the fear of the those dragged to their death by the insurgents.

Few books make me cry, but this one got me twice; definitely the mark of a good storyteller. Whether you're a fan of Les Miserables or not, give this a try. I promise you won't be disappointed.
I'll be short. I stumbled upon this book, a spin-off about Javert, and I thought "Wow! A book about my favourite character from 'Les Miserables'! I must read it!

I have never regretted reading a book more in my life.

I could go on and on about the terrible taste of sub 50-shades level of writing left if my mouth, or the feces-eating scenes, or the horrible racist portrayal of rromani people, or Javert having creepy semi-incestuous sex with prostitutes, or the terrible self-insert Michelle(who knew Javert had a childhood girlfriend?), or the nightmareish Eponine/Enjolras romance, but let me just put it this way

if it was possible to rate a book minus 10, I would, and it still wouldn't illustrate enough how terrible and out of character this book is. I wish for every copy printed to be burnt, and for the author to dedicate their life to something entirely different. Maybe horse keeping. Or pig keeping, referencing the wonderful pig feces eating this book contains. If you love Les Miserables, keep away.
I have always been drawn to Javert and wondered about his past. This book gives a new side to consider. You grow to truly feel sorry for Javert when discovering the elements that made him so stern. Loved the surprises also. I have already recommended to several coworkers.
Though I will say it reads a bit like a really long fix-it fic. Also, I know of some fans who would fight tooth and nail about Javert's characterization as a gypsy
I have loved the character Javert since I learned of the Les Miserables story! This book is his life story and it is masterfully written! I was apprehensive to read it since he lives in the book. But what I wanted to happen and what I assumed have been blended into an awesome ending that I never saw coming! This book takes from the movie and original novel to add to the Les Miserables world. This book is also a solid stand-alone book of its own right. It is also an emotional rollercoaster! I cried for the first time ever from reading a book! (Maybe some lost sleep....) This book is intense!! I have recommended it to all my Les Mis fan friends and to many who don't know the original story. The depth of detail, the blending of historical detail with logical detail, the twists and turns that keep even a Les Mis fan guessing what will happen...all of it will keep you reading non-stop! Read it and judge for yourself. I am glad I did.
